Additionally, Bury Book International Education Library & Archive has many rare and historical publications for those who seek to review such materials. For quite some time The New York Times section on International Education (online) has been feeding IHEC Blog posts to their "Headlines Around the Web" section of the page. I find this section of The New York Times to be one of the most informative news outlets to learn about happenings across the globe related to International Education so this is, of course, an exciting thing for me so I thought I would share. IHEC Blog is also included in numerous blog rolls across the web and I'm thankful to each and every one who has found enough value in IHEC Blog to include it in their blog roll.

The Connection for International Credential Evaluation Professionals (The Connection)

I am very excited to post about a new collaborative tool called The Connection for International Credential Evaluation Professionals (The Connection) for the professional international credential evaluation community. Following are more specifics about The Connection that I am posting with the permission of Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE).

The Connection is a new online community for the professional international credential evaluator. The Connection will bring together individuals from around the world to collaborate, share information, and access resources regarding admissions decisions, the determination of credential equivalencies, the articulation of professional standards, and the promotion of best practices in the field.

As of tonight I am going into hibernation for several weeks as dissertation obligations and family matters such as selling one of two condos and then buying and moving into a new house will consume most of my time (outside of my main priorities of being a father and a husband and working at the University of Chicago). I will peek my head out from my cave occasionally to see what's happening but I'm quite tired and look forward to a well needed rest. I look forward to waking from my slumber to forage for interesting and helpful international education related news and opportunities on the internets that I can pass on to others here on IHEC Blog, over on the International Higher Education Consulting website, on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.

I have found my Google Reader (my preferred RSS feed reader) to be my best friend in learning about the field of international education. It seems that many international educators find RSS Readers to be a very valuable new media tool used to keep up to date on the field according to a recent IHEC Blog new media poll (view results here). In addition to posting to IHEC Blog, Twitter and IHEC Blog's Facebook page I frequently share items of interest relating to international education via my Google Reader on this blog. I actually feed my shared items to IHEC Blog (top right of the page) and my new consulting website/blog http://davidcomp.wordpress.com/ (bottom center of the page). What Would Make a Great Smartphone App for Study Abroad?

I was thinking the other day about smart phone applications and the international educational experience. Specifically, I wonder what features would be essential for a "study abroad" smart phone app? There are certainly enough individual apps (most free) that make travel, living and studying easier. What, in your opinion, would make a great study abroad app?

Some time ago, Abroad 101 put together a Top 10 iPhone Apps for the Student Abroad list and Study Abroad Blog - GIC Argentina put together a 15 iPad Apps for the Study Abroad Student list Additionally, the internationalstudent.com blog is available as an iPhone app and that is how I access this blog (get it here).

Back in November 2009 I created the IHEC Blog YouTube channel as a way to compile a subscription list of all international education/exchange related channels on YouTube. I posted to IHEC Blog about this new network and in the first week I had 13 subscriptions. As of this post I have compiled a subscription list of 294 channels related to international education and exchange which you can view here.

International Education Bookstore

Back in March I announced on IHEC Blog that I created a Bookstore (via Amazon.com). Since then I have been slowly adding to the Bookstore and there are currently 214 books + IHEC Blog Kindle Edition [U.S.] available in the Bookstore which you can access at: http://astore.amazon.com/interhigheedu-20. With a few exceptions I have only added books that include a thumbnail picture of the front cover as I find that helpful when I search for books. I've been working on a new website/blog project for my side International Higher Education Consulting business for a several weeks now. I used to have a Google Page and they changed to Google Sites so the webpage I used to have doesn't look that great and it was hard to navigate on the back end (and it didn't look that professional but it gave me a presence on the web for free). Today over lunch I formally launched the new International Higher Education Consulting site at http://davidcomp.wordpress.com/. I think it looks pretty good and there are many things I really like about it. I still need to do some work on the site so I had a soft launch a few weeks ago before wider promotion yesterday on IHEC Blog which you can read here!

Over on IHEC Blog you will find a brief poll I’m conducting on new media use in international education. Specifically, I want to see which new media tool you feel is the “best” for keeping up to date on the field of international education. I, like many colleagues, find myself utilizing all of the new media tools listed below in the poll (except MySpace as I’m not there ~ should I be?) but there are a few that I turn regularly for information so it is a difficult decision for me (I get to vote in the poll don’t I?). I purposefully set up the survey to allow only one answer per person. I estimate that this survey will take you 17 seconds or less to complete and I thank you in advance for your time!

IHEC Blog Interview with Ruth Sylte about GoAbroad.com & Social Media at #nafsa10

During the 2008 NAFSA annual conference in Washington, DC, Ruth Sylte of the Manitou Heights Group interviewed me about my blog and how I use it to tie in with my side consulting business (International Higher Education Consulting). Ruth uploaded it to her YouTube channel it was my first taste of YouTube (aside from watching funny videos) and the potential this medium has to offer the field of international education as well as my own consulting work.

As I was sitting at O'Hare Airport on my way to the NAFSA annual conference in Kansas City I came up with the idea of doing my own interviews with colleagues and posting them to IHEC Blog's YouTube channel. Well, I was successful in that I was able to conduct three brief interviews with great colleagues. I think this interview with Ruth at the GoAbroad.com booth (@GoAbroad on Twitter) fits very well with this site so please enjoy!

The IHEC Blog International Education Book Store

Recently I created the IHEC Blog International Education Book Store via Amazon.com and had a soft/quiet launch severalweeks ago. The little activity and traffic that I can track has been positive. I mentioned previously over at IHEC Blog in a post that IHEC Blog is now an Amazon Associate (you can read more about that here). I’ve now taken this a step further and have created an international education book store on Amazon.com. All books that I have and will review or highlight on IHEC Blog will be linked to Amazon for people to learn more about the book and to purchase if they would like. Additionally, all books reviewed and highlighted on IHEC Blog will be added to the book store. The book store is currently divided into the following five sections to assist with searching for books:

- IHEC Blog Kindle Edition (reminder that all proceeds will be donated to UNICEF)

International Higher Education Consulting Blog (Kindle Edition)

Yes, you can now get IHEC Blog on the Kindle! I want to thank Penny Schouten (@PennySchouten) for suggesting this a few months ago. I finally found a few minutes this past week to investigate and that’s all that it really took to make it happen.

The main concern I have is that Amazon charges a monthly subscription fee. My intent with making IHEC Blog available on the Kindle was accessibility for readers and not pennies in my pocket. Additionally, Amazon set the monthly subscription fee at $0.99 but I would prefer the IHEC Blog Kindle Edition to be free. If you do subscribe I would love to hear what you think and if you could take a moment to provide a customer review I would appreciate it.

With a monthly subscription I’m not sure how many people will subscribe. Again, I didn’t do this to make money and any revenue generated by Kindle subscriptions I will donate to UNICEF. Even if you don’t have a Kindle or don’t want to subscribe to IHEC Blog please consider making a cash donation to UNICEF!

I have something else in the works for the mobile user and it will be free (assuming I read all the fine print correctly) so stay tuned…

IEB&N is also seeking blog URL submissions from students, faculty and other academics (Fulbright grantees for example) who are blogging from abroad about their experiences. IEB&N is seeking blog URLs from anyone in the world who is studying and/or researching in a foreign country. Interesting blogs, for example, could be from German academics in Japan, Japanese academics in the U.S. or U.S. academics in Germany.

IHEC Blog now has a Facebook Fanpage

This past weekend I created a Facebook fanpage for IHEC Blog. My intent when I first opened a Facebook account was to create a page for IHEC Blog but I experienced a few difficulties in this endeavor so my Facebook account became simply a personal account. Only in the past 2-3 months have I become more active in my Facebook usage and have started to become a fan of and/or joined various groups including:

Last weekend I finally dedicated some time to try and figure out how to create a Facebook page for IHEC Blog and it turned out to be a fairly easy process. As regular IHEC Blog readers know, I also post to Twitter from time to time and for the past several Friday’s I have pulled some of the most interesting links posted to Twitter and compiled them into one post. I will continue to do this on Twitter and will also continue to post to Twitter a link back to IHEC Blog every time a new blog post goes up. I plan to continue to post to Twitter the same as I always have. The challenge to me is to make the content on IHEC Blog Facebook fanpage interesting enough for people to become a fan and follow. To be sure, some topics/information will be posted to Twitter, IHEC Blog and the IHEC Blog Facebook fanpage simultaneously but there will be times when I only post certain information to the IHEC Blog Facebook fanpage and not to Twitter or to IHEC Blog.If you would like to become a fan of the IHEC Blog Facebook fanpage please visit the site here.

IHEC Blog will Participate in Blog Action Day 2009 Focusing on Climate Change

October 15th will be Blog Action Day 2009 and International Higher Education Consulting Blog has registered and will participate. The theme of Blog Action Day 2009 is Climate Change and my plan is to highlight the various efforts and resources in the field of international education that focus on climate change. Examples of what might be included in my Blog Action Day post are:

- Social networks/listservs for international educators that focus on sustainability and greening the field

- study abroad/exchange programs with significant course content focused on climate change/the environment

- Standards of Good Practice

- Study Abroad Programs/Providers mission statements and/or efforts in this area

In order to produce a good resource I need your assistance! Interviewed about being an International Education Blogger

Compiling List of Movies/Television Programs where the Characters go Abroad

I’m not specifically looking for international education experiences. International education experiences of characters in movies and television programs are of course desired but I’m looking more broadly at any character(s) that cross borders as a part of the storyline. Over the past several months I’ve joined several social networks that are related to international education (at least the networks I’m eligible for as I’ve never received Fulbright funding or served as a Peace Corps Volunteer). IHEC Blog Voted #10 in Top 100 International Exchange & Experience Blogs 2009 Competition

I just received word from Erin Gallagher over at the bab.la and Lexiophiles team that my International Higher Education Consulting Blog was voted number 10 in their Top 100 International Exchange & Experience Blogs competition for 2009! This is exciting news and I want to thank everyone who took a moment out of your busy lives to vote for my blog in this competition. Defunct Blogs Deleted and New Blogs Added

The initial launch of International Education Blogs & News back on February 23rd was a way for me to make available the many international education related blogs I find out there in the world wide web available to the masses. There has been good and consistent interest in International Education Blogs & News during the past three months and I wanted to share some metrics since it started:

· 911 page views during 639 visits
· from 382 unique visitors
· from 41 countries and 38 U.S. states & territories
· has 40.22% return visitor rate

These are very modest numbers but I never intended International Education Blogs & News to raking in the hits. I just went through and deleted old/defunct blogs and added some new blogs I recently discovered.

Enhancements to International Education Blogs & News

There has been much positive feedback on International Education Blogs and when I'm not focusing on my family, my work at the University of Chicago, my dissertation proposal, adding content to International Higher Education Consulting Blogs, and my project/editorial work in the field (Forum on Education Abroad, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, Journal of Studies in International Education) I've been making small enhancements since the initial launch on February 23rd. Perhaps there are two that are two that are hopefully most interesting to visitors of International Education Blogs & News.

The first major enhancement to this site is a change in the name of the blog to International Education Blogs & News (IEB&N for short) as I felt this was more representative of what the blog provided to the field of international education.

The second enhancement to the site are the Google news feeds on the left sidebar that cover the following topics:

Study Abroad
International Education
Educational Exchange
Peace Corps

Once on the International Education Blogs & News website you simply click the topic of interest and you'll be able to link to articles on the web found by Google on that topic. I will be adding more topics to this "Google News Roll" in the coming days and weeks but wanted to set up these initial news feeds as a pilot. Please provide comments on these enhancements to International Education Blogs & News and if you have or know of a blog that should be included please post a comment.

International Education Blogs ~ A New Blogging Project by David Comp

International Education Blogs is a new blogging project I started today as an effort to bring all of the blogs on the web that touch on international education issues into one central location. Essentially it will be a blog roll with a few postings. Please bear with me as I learn the technology. This initial launch will have two different blog lists for you to review.

The first list of blogs will be those of people who are blogging on the field/state of international education and related matters.

The second list of blogs will be those of students and others who are currently blogging from a foreign location.
